Dothan, Ala. (WSFA) -- Police and rescue crews responded to a call at Sweetwater apartments in what turned out to be a tragic ending to a sad event.
"It's very very tragic no question about that," said Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd.
The call came in about 6:30, a medical emergency at the apartment complex on the city's west side.
A small child's body was found in a shallow pond at the complex.
Coroner Robert Byrd says the victim is a two year old boy.
Byrd says the when the child's parents woke up they realized their son was missing.
After a quick search of their apartment they moved outside and made the grim discovery in the pond at the complex.
Medics rushed him to the hospital but, sadly, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
"It never gets easy, it could happen to any of us at any time," says Byrd.
Byrd says tragic accidents like this are rare.
"Those are very uncommon, it just doesn't happen very often at all," said Byrd.
