Tanker Driver Dies After Rig Overturns, Spills 8,000 Gallons of Fuel

SMITHS STATION, Ala. -- WSFA 12 News' sister station in Columbus, Georgia is reporting that the driver of an 18-wheeler has died after an accident in Smith Station.

WTVM-TV is reporting that a tanker truck overturned on U.S. Highway 280, causing both sides of the highway to shutdown. The driver of the tanker was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where he later died.

The Smith Station Fire and Rescue officials report approximately 8,000 gallons of fuel spilled on the roadway. As of right now the Lee County Flea Market and other surrounding buildings have been evacuated.

Officials on the scene originally said clean-up would take up to 4 to 5 more hours but are now revising that statement to say they aren't sure when the spill will be cleaned.

Alabama State Troopers are on the scene to help re-route drivers.

WSFA 12 News will have more on this story as it comes into our news room.
