Pike Road Mayor: New Law Puts Home Depot in Pike Road

Pike Road, Al. (WSFA) -- The mayor of Pike Road says the Home Depot in East Montgomery County is now officially part of his town because of a law signed a week and a half ago by Governor Bob Riley.

Mayor Gordon Stone tells WSFA 12 News that Act 2008-481 validates any annexations that went uncontested between 1991 and May 28th of this year.

The city of Montgomery, however, says the law does not apply in this case and that it will have to be decided by the courts.

Pike Road leaders maintain their annexation of Home Depot last July falls under those guidelines effectively handing the property over to the small town.

"The most important thing it does," explains Stone, "is it tells developers that you don't have to worry about litigation about how you came to be apart of Pike Road. What it tells to landowners is that if you chose to be in Pike Road, you will be in the town of Pike Road."

Mayor Stone says Home Depot's sales tax revenue will help the young city create its own school system.

WSFA 12 News will have more on this story as it becomes available.
