10-Year-Old Girl Shot & Killed; Cousin May Be to Blame

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- WSFA 12 News was first on the scene of breaking news in Montgomery on Thursday afternoon.

Police say a 10-year-old girl was shot and killed by her 10 year-old male cousin.

Family and friends arrived at the home on Lynwood Drive shocked to hear the news.

Alonza Parrish was just across the street when the shooting happened. He says he heard the shot that killed the little girl. "I heard the gunshot.  After that all the kids started screaming," said Parrish.

Investigators say the boy shot the girl inside the home. They're still looking in to how the boy got his hands on the gun but say the shooting appears to be an accident.

Captain Huey Thornton with Montgomery Police says, "However, at this point we can't confirm exactly what happened so we are going to list it as a death investigation."

Relatives tells us the two cousins were close and played together at the home all the time. Parrish says he saw the children out in the neighborhood earlier in the day.

Relatives tell us the girl would have been a fifth grader at Wares Ferry Elementary this fall. They declined to go on camera but ask everyone to pray for their family.
