Neighbors Still in Shock after Girl's Death

Montgomery, Al. (WSFA) -- Antoinette Djonret heard the whole thing:  the tragic death of a young girl at the hands of a ten year-old boy.

"We heard people screaming, and my mom noticed them, and we just shot straight through those bushes over there," she explained.

Witnesses say the 10 year old victim was visiting a house on Lynwood Drive at the time when a shot rang out.

Djonret and her mother, a registered nurse, ran over to their neighbor's house to help.

"I've never been on the scene that soon.  It was horrible.  Words can't even express, and I feel so sorry for those kids," Djonret said.

It's especially tough right before the Fourth of July.

On a day devoted to having fun, celebrating freedom--and life--the house next door is eerily quiet.

"They have a trampoline in the backyard.  There would've been maybe 20 kids jumping on the trampoline and riding their bicycles," Djonret said.

"Now, there's not a soul over there. It's just really sad."

Still, neighbors say the young girl's death serves as a reminder to the living to cherish every moment.

"Just tell everybody you can that you love them because life can be taken away in a blink of an eye," Djonret said.

Authorities say the victim's body is at the Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy.  Police are treating the case as a "death investigation," but they tell WSFA 12 News the death appears to be an accident.
