Governor Bob Riley Calls for Energy Independence

Montgomery, AL (WSFA)-- Governor Bob Riley says America must become energy independent. In a video message, the governor urged congress to allow for more energy exploration.

Last week, the governor sent a letter to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking her to allow debate on a bill that would lift restriction on off-shore drilling. Governor Riley encouraged Alabamians to join him in sending a message to Washington.  Gov. Riley continued to say, "we're blessed with vast energy resources. With today's technology, these resources can be brought to market in an environmentally safe manor. Will it take time for these changes to have an impact? Absolutely. But that's why congress should start now."

As for the presidential candidates, Republican John McCain wants the ban on drilling lifted, while Democratic Candidate Barack Obama said reducing the use of oil is the answer.
