Wiregrass Newsroom Update: Family Speaking out after Church Bus Accident

Albuquerque, NM (KOB)-- Two weeks ago a deadly church van versus truck crash in Dothan took the life of a young boy and left his younger brother in a coma, and now their family is talking for the first time.

Eleven year old Rippen Upton was killed when the pick up he was in hydro-planed on a rain slick road and was hit broadside by a church bus.

For the last week and a half his younger brother has been hanging onto life in a Birmingham hospital, and the family is struggling to bring him home.

Rippen suffered severe head injuries and died a few hours after the crash.   His younger brother Brody is still in a coma and may not survive.

Through the crushing grief, the family is working frantically to get Brody back to New Mexico -- something they couldn't do for Rippen.

Rippen's stepmother, Anna Costlow says, "we wanted to bury and not cremate him but it was the only way we could get him home and we just don't want to have to do that again."

Because of Brody's condition, it will cost the family $25,000 to hire an air ambulance to bring him home.
