President Bush to Lift Ban on Offshore Drilling

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush today will lift an executive ban on offshore oil drilling . White House press secretary Dana Perino says Bush will officially lift the ban and explain why he's taking the action in a Rose Garden appearance this afternoon. Congress would also have to lift its own prohibition for any offshore drilling to actually take place. Last month, Bush asked Congress to take action. Perino says he's making his move now because the Democratic leaders in Congress have not "even held a single hearing." She says that the White House hopes that the president's lifting of the ban "will spur action by Congress."
