Dothan, Ala. (WSFA) -- The city of Dothan began demolition work at the old city jail Monday morning.

Around 10:00 a.m. city crews began tearing down the old city jail in downtown.

The land the jail sits on will be used to create more parking in downtown Dothan.

The city will combine the lot the jail is on with the space the old Personality Shop and SEACT Building are on to create the parking area.

Public Works Director Jerry Corbin says razing the building is a continuation of the downtown plan for Dothan.

"It will all be either driveway and or parking but the idea is to create between 30 and 40 additional spaces over there along with some green space to," said Corbin.

The old city jail is attached to the Dothan Opera House.

The city says they are taking special precautions to make sure no damage occurs to the Opera House while demolition is being done at the jail.
