ALEXANDER CITY, AL (WSFA) - A teenage girl is dead after a house fire in Tallapoosa County.

The Alex City Fire Department says 17-year old Jasmine Russell died when her home caught fire early Tuesday afternoon.

Family members say the girl was taking a nap when the fire started; investigators say she died of smoke inhalation.

Her younger sister, 14-year-old Jacquline Russell, was able to escape from the burning house and was not injured.

When firefighters arrived on the scene the home was already well involved.

Russell's body was found in a back room of the house.

Medics rushed her to the hospital where she died.

A firefighter was also injured in the blaze. He suffered burn injuries on his ears and neck but is expected to be okay.

An investigation into what started the fire is ongoing.
