Editorial Making Movies 7-29-08
Sweet Home Alabama was a sweet movie for some.
An upcoming movie on the Tuskegee Airmen should be even better.
It's a shame neither movie was made here.
When it comes to movie making, Alabama loses millions of potential income to neighboring states.
Those states offer incentives, we don't.
We should. A bill this past legislative session offering sales and lodging tax exemptions for qualified production companies spending certain amounts on movie making, never made it to a vote.
There is no downside to these incentives, since without them, the money doesn't come.
With them, jobs are created, our economy becomes more diversified, and tourism and civic pride is stimulated.
We could use the millions in revenue we used to get when Alabama did offer movie making incentives.
It's past time to offer them again.
