Folks witness rare total solar eclipse

Skywatchers from Canada to China were treated to a rare solar spectacle today.

The moon passed directly between the sun and the Earth momentarily, causing a solar eclipse of the sun.

The event started in Canada, tracked across Greenland and northern Russia.

The shadow of the eclipse ends in China where some see it as a dark omen ahead of the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

The eclipse reaches its full point when the sky darkens enough for stars to be seen and the corona makes a spectacular halo around the moon.

The next solar eclipse will occur on July 22, 2009.
