Macon County, Al. (WSFA) -- It's a story that leaves investigators scrambling for answers.

Late Saturday night, deputies in Macon County discovered the bodies of a man and a woman--in the street on County Road 2 in the Fort Davis community.

Ronnie Holmes has a house just yards away from the scene, but he didn't know what happened until authorities arrived.

"There were all kinds of police cars out there.  I started out there, and they told me to come back in the house," Holmes said.

Investigators are keeping a tight lid on the case.

Sheriff David Warren will only confirm that the victims were shot.

It's a mystery that has the small community of Fort Davis on edge.

"It's just a shocking thing.  [It's a] good thing my kids weren't here because it would have been a bad thing for them to see," Holmes explained.

With no arrests in the case, residents like Ronnie Holmes are worried about their safety for the first time.

"I hate to have his happen too close to my home," Holmes said.

Investigators are still searching for a suspect.  If you have any information, you're asked to call the Macon County Sheriff's Office at (334) 727-2500.
