Brothers Get Bronze Star For Soldier

MOBILE, AL - It took more than three years, but two brothers finally got the okay to give one of their fellow soldiers a Bronze Star.

Colonel Scott Gedling and Commander Sgt. Major Jackie Gedling, from the Army National Guard's 711th signal Battalion in Mobile, worked tirelessly to make sure Sgt. 1st Class Harold Smith of Pensacola, Florida received the Bronze Star for heroic actions while he was in a unit attached to the 711th in Iraq.

Smith was initially granted the award while the units were still in Iraq in 2004, but the award was delayed because of a minor technicality.

Smith finally received the Bronze Star in a ceremony at his home armory in Crestview, Florida, on Tuesday.

Smith was cited for "continually exposing himself to hostile fire while coordinating Apache Helicopter Gunships."
