Punishment handed down in fatal Houston County van crash

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFAS) - There is new information on a fatal accident in Montgomery County involving a Houston County Corrections officer.

WSFA 12 News has learned the punishment for the deputy involved in the accident that caused the death of an inmate.

Michael Shelly was using a cell phone while transporting the inmate when he ran a red light and caused a three car crash.

Thirtynine year old inmate Terry Irvin was killed in that accident.

Shelley was suspended for one day without pay.

At this point no charges have been filed, but the case will be presented to a Montgomery County grand jury.
