3 More Cases of West Nile Reported in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)- Officials say three more cases of West Nile virus infections have been reported in Jefferson County, lifting its total for the year to four The statewide total reached 11, with no deaths reported, compared with 24 cases including three fatalities the previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An epidemiologist with the Jefferson County Health Department, Kingsley Sathiakumar, said the outbreak of cases is not unexpected this time of the year. The virus is carried by birds and mosquitoes.
