Montgomery assault upgraded to murder

Montgomery, Al. (WSFA) -- A Montgomery woman is dead after spending nearly two days in a local hospital.

Authorities say Brenda Sherard, 53, died Saturday morning at Baptist Medical Center South.

Police say three young men are responsible for her death, after they allegedly tried to rob Sherard and her husband in their own driveway on Noremac Road.

The suspects allegedly held a gun to the couple and demanded money.  When Sherard refused, one of the men allegedly beat the woman in the face, causing massive injuries.

One of the suspects, according to police, beat the woman in the face.

"She went to the hospital and she never recovered," explained Captain Huey Thornton of the Montgomery Police Department.

"That's why, at this point, we've upgraded our investigation to a capital murder investigation."

Police have yet to make an arrest in this case.
