BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - UAB officials say a major grant will help fund a new research center aimed at finding treatments for developmental disabilities like autism, rett syndrome and cerebral palsy.
Researchers also hope the new facility will help offer new resources and new information for families.
Dr. Matthew Remich, executive director of Mitchell's Place, an autism treatment center says one in every 150 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and 30,000 Alabamians are currently living with autism.
Remich said if children with autsim are diagnosed early they can lead productive lives.
The new facility will be built on the site of the former UAB Mental Retardation Research Center.
