BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) -- Birmingham police say they have captured an escaped inmate after he overpowered a bailiff and stole his weapon.

Lakendall Sims, a convicted rapist, was serving a life sentence for capital murder and home invasion.

He escaped Tuesday from the county courthouse in Bessemer while he was returning to a courtroom for a hearing related to his case.

Jefferson County officials said Sims stole a van after he escaped and abandoned it a few hours later in Lipscomb.

Police say Sims was captured without incident Wednesday near Lipscomb.
