MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery police detectives make a break in the city's 17th murder of the year. All the suspects were between the ages of 15 and 17.
Brenda Sherard and her husband, Johnnie, returned to their Montgomery home from dinner last Thursday evening only to be confronted by at least three suspects in their driveway.
Investigators say the suspects attempted to rob the couple and when Mrs. Sherard protested she was beaten in the face. She died at a local hospital on Saturday, September 13.
Now, investigators say a 13-year-old girl held the key to identifying the suspects, and after providing a false statement police confronted her.
The girl then told investigators she knew the suspects identities and admitted the suspects had been at her home that evening.
17 year-old Herbert Turner of 378 W. Delano Avenue, 16-year-old Jhavarske Lewis of 3882 Thomas Avenue, 17-year-old Quanderrious Johnson of 2610 Fairground Road and a fourth suspect who is 15-years-old and not identified because of their status as a minor.
Each of the suspects is now charged with Capital Murder.
Investigators also arrested the 13-year-old girl on a 1st Degree Hindering Prosecution charge. She was taken to the Montgomery County Youth Facility.
The Montgomery Police Department says it is confident it has all the offenders in this case but says the investigation is still active and ongoing.
Brenda Sherard's funeral started at 11:00 Thursday morning at Leak Memorial Funeral Home.
The couple did not have a life insurance policy so loved ones have set up a special fund to offset the funeral costs. If you would like to donate to the fund you can do so at any local Whitney Bank location.
