The minister at Brenda Sherard's funeral announced the news. He told the crowd,"Those responsible for her death have been captured and are in custody."
The arrests came as relief to family and friends. "We never had a problem in this neighborhood," said Virginia Crouch.
Crouch lives just two streets over from the Sherards. She says the neighborhood has been on edge since the attack . She says they are,"Just being more cautious about everything going on in the neighborhood."
Brenda Sherard and her husband Johnny had just returned home when they were attacked. She was hit in the face with a pistol. She died from a heart attack two days later. "That was an awful, hideous crime that happened in this city," said Montgomery Police Chief Art Baylor.
Police call the suspects violent criminals. Baylor said at a press conference, "This is not the Fellowship of Christian Athletes we are dealing with. They are thugs."
Word of the arrests brought some peace of mind to the neighborhood, but Crouch says things will never be the same. "You still have to be on alert," she says.
