MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - He's been in the dog house for nearly 24 hours and tonight he's out.

Montgomery County Humane Society director Steven Tears constructed a cage on the lawn of the Shoppes at Eastchase Thursday and said he wouldn't come out of it until he'd raised $20,000 for the shelter.

Friday afternoon at 5:00 he was a free man.

Tears said he wanted to show Montgomerians just how many animals are euthanized at the shelter every year, around 10,000 so far for 2008.

The number is higher than the average for the area and continues to rise said Tears in an interview with WSFA 12 News Thursday.

Blueridge Mountain Water unloaded 10,000 bottles of water to give passers-by a way to put the number into perspective.
