MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Mario Woodward, convicted and sentenced to death for the August 2006 murder of a Montgomery police officer, has now been turned over to the state.
Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall says Woodward was moved to Donaldson Correctional Facility near Birmingham around 1:15pm Friday.
The move to Donaldson was made because Holman Prison in Atmore was at capacity said Marshall.
A check of records shows 206 people on death row in the state of Alabama right now.
There hasn't been a person from the Montgomery area sent to death row since 1999.
Woodward's jury recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole last month for the murder of Montgomery police officer Keith Houts.
On Thursday, the judge in the case overruled that jury's 8-4 decision and gave Woodward the maximum penalty.
