Sluggish economy takes toll on automobile industry

Montgomery, Al. (WSFA) -- The sluggish economy has resulted in buyers staying out of the automobile showrooms. The numbers for Hyundai are down significantly from a year ago.

However, Hyundai sales figures appear to be consistent with what's happening to all auto manufacturers. Ford sales were off 34%, Toyota down 32%, and General Motors was off 16%.

Hyundai, which had gone against the trend by increasing sales in August was down 25% a month later in September.

It's not all bad news though, some models did see an increase including the Montgomery-made Sonata sedan.  The Sonata increased its sales volume by 24% compared to this time last year.

The Accent sold about the same as a year ago, but the Hyundai Elantra struggled down 50% from last September.

In addition to the Sonata, the local plant also manufactures the Santa Fe SUV.
