Convicted sex offender charged again

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - He was convicted of a felony sex offense against a minor in 2002 and now William Joe Mitchell is being charged again for driving a 15-year-old girl to Andalusia for sex.

Mitchell, 47, is a resident of Jacksonville, Florida and was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury after allegations surfaced that in 2007 he drove the minor from Florida to Alabama for sexual purposes.

The convicted sex offender is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service though his initial appearance and arraignment date haven't been set.

U.S. Attorney Leura Canary says if Mitchell is convicted of the crime he faces a minimum 10 year prison sentence. The maximum sentence he faces includes life in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime term of supervised release.

His prior criminal history may also qualify him for a mandatory life sentence under federal statute.
