Dothan, Ala.  (WSFA) -- The watchful eyes of a Houston County correctional officer helped foil an escape attempt at the county jail.

Around 11 pm Saturday correctional officers discovered damage on a cell bar.

"Officers were attempting to relocate inmates to some other cells when they noticed this damage," said Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes.

The cell belonged to Gregory Antonio Patterson who was being held pending trial for previous robbery arrests.

Sheriff Hughes say correctional officers found a small blade hidden in a bible in Patterson's cell.

"Patterson is being charged with 2nd Degree Escape.  He will have an additional bond of $50,000 on that charge," said Hughes.  "We are still in the process of investigating how the blade got into the jail."

Sheriff Hughes says at no time was the public in danger.

Patterson's previous arrests stemmed from armed robberies of a gas station.
