MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A Montgomery judge has ordered the Alabama Department of Corrections to release the records of an inmate who was found comatose in prison and later died.
Farron Barksdale, who pleaded guilty in the shooting deaths of two Athens police officers, was found unconscious just three days after arriving at a state prison last year.
His mother, Mary Barksdale, sued to get access to prison records of its investigation into the death.
Corrections officials said the death investigation they conducted did not fall under Alabama's Open Records Act.
Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Eugene W. Reese ordered DOC Commissioner Richard Allen to release the records Wednesday.
