Tuskegee Mayor's Political Career Sidelined

Longtime Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford's political career has been sidelined after he lost a bid for an eighth term as mayor of Tuskegee.

But the 66-year-old Ford says he won't stop and expects to again seek out the political spotlight. He didn't say what the future holds, but didn't rule out running for the Legislature or statewide office.

Over the years, Ford has become one of Alabama's best-known politicians.

Ford was defeated last week in a runoff for the mayor's office by former Macon County Commissioner Omar Neal. Neal was 14 in 1972 when Ford became Tuskegee's first black mayor and one of the first black mayors in Alabama.
