Man gets 12 years in fatal shooting of Dothan teen

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Houston County judge has sentenced 22-year-old Joshua Noel Jones to 12 years in prison for the shooting death of 15-year-old Danny McKinnon of Dothan.

Jones was convicted last month of manslaughter in the Jan. 8 shooting death of McKinnon. He was sentenced Tuesday by Houston County Circuit Judge Ed Jackson. Houston County District Attorney Doug Valeska said McKinnon was shot to death while several young people were recklessly playing with a .40-caliber handgun.

Jones' defense attorney argued during the trial that the gun accidentally went off while Jones attempted to pass it to McKinnon in the back seat of a pickup truck.

McKinnon's father, Wayne McKinnon, said he thought justice was served with the sentence.
