Dothan, Ala. (WSFA) -  This year public safety officials introduced new mobile alcohol test vehicles or bat mobiles which allow troopers to test for impaired driving on site.

The Dothan trooper post received theirs just recently and has already put it to use.

Dothan, Welcome the bat mobile.

Bat stands for breath alcohol testing, and specially equipped vans containing those devices are allowing troopers to perform roadside sobriety tests.

The Dothan trooper post has been putting theirs to use.

Troopers received over a million dollars in grant money to purchase these vehicles.

"Dui's cause about half of all fatalities throughout the state of Alabama, so this is something that is real good for our area," said Sgt. Tracy Nelson, an Alabama State Trooper.

Troopers say the new bat mobile allow them to get the most accurate sobriety test out in the field because it cuts down on the time it takes to transport a suspect to jail.

"This is just another one of those advances where we can actually bring the instruments to the field that will actually help our officers throughout all of Alabama to help increase the conviction rate after an arrest has been made," said Sgt. Nelson.

Troopers say they'll use the new vehicles at large events and at roadside checks.
