Dothan, Ala. (WSFA) -- For the first time in almost 18 years Dothan's City Commission voted to raise rates at the city landfill.
Rates were raised to $39 per ton up from $29.
The new fee will cover operational costs that the city is currently losing money on.
As well, the new fee will cover a one dollar charge that the state is imposing on all landfills statewide.
"It allows us to recover those costs because the city is paying those cost no matter what whether it's by taking money somewhere else to pay that costs or by the garbage that's disposed of there," said Mike West, city manager for Dothan.
There could be a silver lining to the rate increase though.
If private companies who dump their trash at the landfill leave because of the higher rates it could extend the life of the landfill.
"We're looking at somewhere in the three year range where the current landfill will be full and therefore we need to start preparing for what to do with our garbage next," said West.
The cost of a new landfill could cost the city 10 million dollars.
