Three crosses raise racial complaints in Lee County

SMITHS, AL (WSFA) - Three wooden crosses are stirring complaints of racial harassment in Lee County and now the sheriff's office and FBI are investigating.

The crosses, ranging from 3 to 5 feet in height were planted in the yard of a Lee Road resident in Smiths.

Officials say one of the crosses is spray painted with the letters "KKK" and a nylon rope tied in a noose was hanging from it.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office says it contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the two organizations are conducting a joint investigation into the matter.
