MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An accident report says the driver of an 18-wheeler was going faster than the speed limit while trying to pass a car when the 18-wheeler collided with an Alabama prison van on a curve, killing all seven in the van.
The report by Department of Public Safety investigators says the truck driver, 31-year-old Andrew David Carter of Tifton, Ga., was traveling an estimated 65 mph in a 55 mph zone while trying to pass a car heading east on U.S. Highway 82 on Oct. 3.
The report says the prison van was headed west and the vehicles collided and burst into flames when they both swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting each other.
The van driver and six prison system job applicants were killed.
The truck driver survived.
