Ala. 2-year colleges seek funds for shelter costs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has asked FEMA to pay two-year colleges more than $2 million for the cost of providing shelters for 6,500 evacuees from Hurricane Gustav, but Alabama officials may have to try to get some of the money from Louisiana.

Alabama's junior college system chancellor Bradley Byrne said Thursday the cost to the state raises questions about whether the two-year colleges will be able to provide the shelters in the future, particularly to people from outside Alabama.

Byrne said only about one-third of the $2.2 million the shelters cost the state has been reimbursed so far. He said Alabama is now being told about a third of that will have to come from Louisiana's EMA office because the evacuees were from that state.
