McCain takes Alabama's nine electoral votes

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Republican John McCain has carried Alabama in his campaign for the White House, defeating Democrat Barack Obama in a race with historic firsts on both sides of the ticket.

McCain was leading in early returns Tuesday with 55 percent of the vote and was projected to carry the state.

The Republican victory is the eighth straight for the GOP in presidential elections in Alabama.

It gives McCain the state's nine electoral votes.

Obama would become the nation's first black president if he wins.

McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, would be the first female vice president.
