Alabama Civil Rights Pioneer Dies

Birmingham, AL (WVTM)--Civil rights leader the Rev. Abraham Woods has died. Rev. Woods died Friday afternoon following an extended illness at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.
Rev. Woods served as longtime president of the Birmingham chapter of the SCLC and often led community marches to protest police shootings, slumlords and neighborhood violence. In 1993, he organized an annual gun buy-back to get guns out of the community.

During the civil rights era he worked with Dr. Martin Luther King and led meetings to plan marches and sit-ins. He also helped coordinate the March on Washington in 1963.
