Mobile wins billion dollar ship contract

Mobile, Ala. (WSFA) -- Alabama's port city wins a billion dollar ship contract. The  U.S. Navy has awarded Austal U.S.A. a $1.6 billion contract to build 10 high-speed military transport ships in Mobile.

The announcement was made today by Sen. Richard Shelby. The company was competing with two other shipbuilders.

The bid for Austal's operations on the Mobile River will keep their 1,000 workers employed.

Austal is an Australian-based ship maker. It opened a facility on the Mobile River in 1999.
