The Indians who lived in the Pilgrims' neighborhood did not need the newcomers to teach them about thanksgiving. They had been holding similar celebrations for many generations.

Nickommoh was a yearly celebration for the Naragansset people, including the Wampanoag Indians who shared the "first Thanksgiving" with the Pilgrims. It was a time to give thanks for a successful harvest, and included feasting, music and games.
