Appeals court reverses rehiring at Bishop State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Court of Civil Appeals has reversed a hearing officer's decision that Bishop State Community College must rehire former Mobile County School Board member David Thomas.

The appeals court ruled unanimously Friday that hearing officer Thomas Humphries must take another look at the case.

The judges told him to consider whether Thomas' felony conviction and impeachment from the school board are good and just causes for dismissal from the two-year college in Mobile.

The college fired Thomas last year because of his felony conviction for leaving the scene of an auto accident that injured a child.

Thomas also was impeached from the school board for using school funds to buy Mardi Gras parade throws.

The hearing officer ruled in March that the firing wasn't proper and that Thomas must be rehired.
