1 killed, probation officer wounded in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A state probation officer was wounded and a probationer killed Monday morning in a shooting near downtown Mobile.

Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles assistant director Robert Oakes says probation officers Dan Thompson and Paul Morton were trying to arrest a 32-year-old man about 9 a.m.

Police spokesman Cpl. Charles Bagsby identified the man as Christopher Foehl, who died at the scene of the shooting.

He said the officers attempted to apprehend Foehl for a probation violation.

Officers had chased Foehl from the parking lot of the probation office into the backyard of a home across the street where he was killed.

It was not immediately clear who fired the fatal shot.

Oakes says Thompson suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, along with Morton, who injured his hand in the struggle.

Oakes says he did not know how Foehl got a gun.

He says the man had been under supervision for a burglary conviction.
