Former Mobile Mayor Lambert Mims dead at 78

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former Mobile Mayor Lambert Mims has died. He was 78.

Mims, who died Monday at Mobile Infirmary, served on the three-member Mobile City Commission, which rotated the title of mayor, from 1965 to 1985.

A federal conviction overshadowed his successful political career.

While running for mayor in 1989, Mims, a Democrat, was charged in three counts of a 35-count indictment.

He claims the charges were timed by Republicans to halt his campaign.

In 1990, he was convicted of two counts of violating the Hobbs Act involving a garbage-to-steam plant project.

After serving 46 months in prison, he was paroled.

Mims failed in a 1997 civil suit to have his sentence vacated.

After prison, Mims operated a real estate business only a few blocks from the city office he once occupied.
