FIRST ON WSFA 12 NEWS: Firefighters Respond to Fire on Alabama State University Campus

Montgomery, AL (WSFA) - Montgomery firefighters continue to investigate a fire on the campus of Alabama State University.

Firefighters tell WSFA 12 News a fire broke out inside the Leila Barlow Theater in the Tullibody Fine Arts Building around 6:20 Friday evening.

Firefighters say the footlights may have ignited the theater's curtains on fire.  The firefighters encountered large flames when they arrived 4 minutes after the 911.

The flames are now out, and no one was hurt.

Dr. Tommie Tonea Stewart is with the theater department at Alabama State University. During our interview she was holding back tear saying the curtains were relatively new and were suppose to be fire retardant. She was in the building when another faculty member called and told her to get out because of the fire.

Stewart says this is especially damaging because they are so proud of the theater department at ASU. We are told the theater suffered some water and smoke damage as well.

ASU is now waiting on the official cause of the fire to be sent to them from the Montgomery Fire Department.
