Alabama Legislators Look at Gambling Tax

MONTGOMERY, Ala (AP) - The chairmen of the Legislature's education budget committees say legislators need to consider a gambling tax when they convene in February.

Sen. Hank Sanders of Selma and Rep. Richard Lindsey of Centre said Alabama doesn't levy a gambling tax on electronic bingo machines and that should change. They said a gambling tax is a way to help the prorated state education budget without adding any consumer taxes. The Alabama Education Association is also supporting the idea.

AEA's delegate assembly recently passed a resolution calling for a tax rate of 20 percent of the gross revenue after paying winnings.
