Old Montgomery tradition, new location

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- It all began in 1821 and Friday the tradition continued.  The bell rang out at the Freeney's Bell Tavern ceremony at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa in downtown Montgomery.

Clement Freeney built the Montgomery hotel, where the Renaissance now stands, in 1821, with a bell outside to toll the time of day and invite people for food and drinks.  Today the Renaissance provides food and drinks and entertainment at its Freeney's Bell Tavern and will ring the new bell everyday.

The original 1821 bell, is on special loan from the Alabama Department of archives and history and hangs in the Exchange Tavern.
