MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Teammates and classmates are mourning the loss of a student athlete Tuesday.
Richelle Jones, 18, was killed Monday night after her car slammed into a tree and overturned. The accident happened on Alabama 21 near Camden.
The Selma native was a freshman at Alabama State University where she was studying physical therapy .
She was also an up-and-coming player on the ASU basketball team, playing in eight games this season.
Coach Freida Jackson says she is heart-broken by the news. Jackson says Richelle was a wonderful young woman, a model student, and would have a been a standout player in the coming years.
Coach Jackson says she had the chance to talk with the players and Richelle's family.
