Clayton teen charged in church burglaries

ABBEVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A Henry County sheriff's deputy has linked a teenager to recent burglaries at two rural churches.

Investigator Troy Silva said 18-year-old Caleb Benefield of Clayton is charged with breaking into Mt. Zion Church in Abbeville and the Macedonia Church of God in Abbeville.

Both break-ins occurred in Oct. Benefield, who was already in the Barbour County Jail on an unrelated charge, faces two felony counts of 3rd-degree burglary.

Silva said he obtained a confession from Benefield and additional charges are pending.

The teen reportedly told deputies he stole money, soft drinks and other items from the churches.

He was being held on bonds totaling $10,000.
