MONTGOMERY, AL., (WSFA) -- Every day blood is needed in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save lives of accident victims.
This is why the American Red Cross has teamed up with several local radio stations in our area to promote their "Radio for Red Cross Blood Drive" that begins today.
The "Radio for Red Cross Blood Drive" will take place in the Vaughn Road Church of Christ Fellowship Hall located at 3800 Vaughn Road from 12pm - 7pm.
Potential donors are asked to come out and vote for their favorite radio station in our area. Donors will receives a free T-shirt, a free personal radio, as well as a chance to enter a regional drawing to win a $250 gift certificate from Jimmy's Car Stereo or a pair of Delta Air Lines domestic tickets.
Helen Carol, American Red Cross' Donor Recruitment Manager, is stressing the importance of the African American community getting involved with this blood drive.
According to Carol, "The blood donations from African Americans and Hispanics in our community reflects less than 1% of their growing population. Plus, our most requested blood types, O and B, are found in abundance within the African American and Hispanic community."
Giving blood is a safe and easy process that takes about an hour. In general, you must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and have not donated blood in the last 56 days. A picture ID or Donor Card is also required to donate blood.
