PIKE ROAD, Ala. (WSFA) -- It's a deal nearly two years in the making.
"The Town of Pike Road is beginning the year of 2009 by welcoming its newest and biggest retailer, Walmart," said Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone, telling residents for the first time.
As pleasant surprise rang through the crowd, one of the country's biggest retailers become part of Montgomery's other growing next door neighbor.
"We've talked to them about what their vision is for our community. They have an understanding of what our vision is, and it's just a good fit," Stone explained.
Residents say it's a great match because revenue from the store will help the town's budding educational system.
"This is one step closer to the school that we want at Pike Road, and this will provide some of the support that we need," said Nancy Land.
"It's tremendous, because I think the whole dynamic of making Pike Road a real community is getting a school, so it's a major, major announcement," explained Ed Welch.
With the economy still faltering, town leaders say that support is paramount.
