Teen killed in Elmore County shooting

Elmore, Ala. (WSFA) --  Folks in the small town of Elmore are upset after a 16 year old was murdered over the weekend.

The victim was shot and killed in his neighbors home.

A week after Elmore County's first murder of the year investigators are now working another homicide.

Investigators say the victim, 16 year old Qauntavis Wilkes, was shot and killed.

Deputies arrested a neighbor, 24 year old Randy Demetrius Martin and charged him with Wilkes murder.

Sheriff Bill Franklin says Martin went looking for Wlikes to question him about property stolen from his trailer.

The sheriff says Wilkes went inside Martins home where the two argued in the living room.

"A brief struggle in sued soon afterwards Mr. Martin grabbed a 9mm weapon and fired one shot into the upper torso of Mr. Wilkes, and Mr. Wilkes died as a result of that wound to the chest," said Sheriff Franklin.

Sheriff Franklin says this crime is shocking two murders in a week.

"We were fortunate, sort of bizarre we had no homicides all throughout the year of 2008 and here it is 2009 and we haven't even gone the first month and we've already got two," says Franklin.

Wilkes was just a sophomore at Stanhope Elmore High School.  No word if any memorial services have been planned.

Martin is charged with murder, he's in the Elmore County jail under $50,000 bond.
