State revenue officials warn against e-mail scam

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Department of Revenue is warning taxpayers about a new email scam. The email claims to be from the state, telling recipients they are due a refund. But they must click on a link and enter their personal information.

An employee at the revenue department actually received the e-mail. The department then sent out notifications to millions of Alabamians.

State Revenue Commissioner Tim Russell says, "we do not do any online interaction unless the taxpayer has come to us with a basic e-mail question."

Russell says taxpayers should not click on the link and should not give out any personal information over unsecured web sites.

There are similar bogus emails that claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service. For more information, check out the IRS web site.
